THIS IS MY AFRICA (2009)

This Is My Africa is a seminal, award-winning 52-minute documentary that takes a deceptively innovative approach to telling a new kind of story about Africa and Africans. Produced and directed by Zina Saro-Wiwa, the film is a quirky reposte to a global conversation about Africa that id, steeped in negativity, poverty porn and inertia.

On the global stage ‘Conversations About Africa’ are held between world leaders, pop stars and NGOs. Not between ordinary people that love or despair of have hope for the continent. I want to push these more private, nuanced and passionate conversations in to the public realm to add subtlety to the public dialogue,” Zina Saro-Wiwa (2008)

This Is My Africa features interviewees such as Lupita Nyong’o, Colin Firth, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Akomfrah, Noo Saro-Wiwa and Yinka Shonibare MBE amongst others. It has been shown in museums and galleries all over the world, and also at film festivals in New York, Atlanta, Accra, Amsterdam, Berlin, Lagos, Abuja, London, Edinburgh, Harare Sweden, Spain, Poland, Holland and all around the US. This is My Africa was also featured on CNN in April 2008, won Best Documentary Short at the International Black Docufest 2008, and was shown on HBO from 2010 to 2012.
