The Restless Grove: Sculptural Works by Perrin Oglafa
On May 31st 2014, Perrin Oglafa became Boys’ Quarters Project Space’s inaugural exhibiting artist. Curated by Zina Saro-Wiwa, his show The Restless Grove presented sculptural pieces that differ from the more commercial paintings he is well known for. The works express his love for the natural world. A love that is complicated in a place like Nigeria where reverence for the natural world is associated negatively with animistic pre-Christian belief systems. There is a simplicity in his gestures, his way with wood, his insistence on found objects sourced from his Niger Delta village and in particular his dissembled canvases, pulled apart one thread at a time that are at odds with an environment defined by imports, plastic and the production of crude oil.
